  • Last day to Pre-Register to Vote: Saturday, October 24

  • Early voting: October 5 - November 2

  • Election Day: Tuesday, November 3, 7am - 9pm

REGISTERING TO VOTE

Pre-Registering Before the Election:

  • Check to see if you are already registered:

  • Register to vote at your current address:

    • If you have an Iowa Driver's License, register online

    • If you do not have an Iowa Driver's License, fill out this form and return to the Polk County Auditor:  Polk County Election Office, 120 2nd Ave., Suite A, Des Moines, IA 50309

    • You should receive a letter from the County Auditor a few weeks later confirming that you are registered

  • Deadline to register is Saturday, October 24, 2020

Registering In Person On Election Day:

Please note that registering in person on election day is not recommended and that it is better to pre-register

  • Find your precinct polling location:

  • Have Proof of ID; valid ID includes:

    • Iowa non-driver ID card

    • Out-of-state driver's license or non-driver ID card

    • U.S. passport

    • U.S. military ID

    • ID card issued by employer

    • Student ID issued by Iowa high school or college

    • Tribal ID
       

  • Have Proof of Residence; valid proof includes:

    • Residential lease

    • Utility bill (including cell phone bill)

    • Bank statement

    • Paycheck

    • Government check or other government document

    • If you live in a dorm, your University will supply you with documentation

VOTING BY MAIL

Request an Absentee Ballot

  • Print and complete the Absentee Ballot Request Form:

  • Be sure to include your phone number and email, so that the Auditor can get in touch with you if any of the information is incorrect

  • Mail your completed absentee ballot request form to the Polk County Auditor:  Polk County Election Office, 120 2nd Ave., Suite A, Des Moines, IA 50309

  • Requests for absentee mail-in ballots must be IN  the Polk County Auditor's office by 5 pm, Saturday, October 24, 2020.  (If mailed, must be postmarked October 19 or earlier.)

Voting with an Absentee Ballot

  • Once requested, the Polk County Auditor will mail you a ballot with instructions in early October. Make sure to follow the instructions to fill out the ballot.

  • Mail your completed ballot to the Polk County Auditor:  Polk County Election Office, 120 2nd Ave., Suite A, Des Moines, IA 50309

  • Track your absentee ballot:

  • YOUR BALLOT MUST BE RECEIVED by the Polk County Auditor’s office by 8pm on November 3, 2020, or postmarked November 2, 2020 or earlier

  • If you requested an absentee ballot, and later decide to vote in person, just bring your absentee ballot to the polls

VOTING IN PERSON

On Election Day

  • Find your polling place

  • Go to your polling place between the hours of 7am and 9pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2020

  • Have an approved photo ID; the following count as valid forms of identification if it has a photo of you and an expiration date:

    • Iowa Driver’s License (not expired more than 90 days)

    • Iowa Non-Operator ID (not expired more than 90 days)

    • U.S. Passport (not expired)

    • U.S. Military ID or Veteran ID (not expired)

    • Iowa Voter Identification Card (must be signed)

    • Tribal ID Card/Document (must be signed, with photo, not expired)

  • Have proof of residence if the address you are registered to vote at does not match the address on your ID (extremely important if the address on your approved form of ID is out-of-state).  Proof of residence includes:

    • Residential lease

    • Utility bill (including a cell phone bill)

    • Bank statement

    • Paycheck

    • Government check or other government document

    • If you live in a dorm, your University will supply you with documentation

Early Voting in Person

  • You can vote absentee at the Polk County Auditor's office from October 5 - November 2, 2020

    • Vote at the Polk County Election Office, 120 2nd Ave., Suite A, Des Moines, IA 50309

  • You will need the same ID and residence verification materials discussed in the Election Day voting section
